About us
Our Club is made up entirely of volunteers. Everyone involved gives their time freely to help run the Club and train it’s members. Many of us are involved in various dog sports and all of us enjoy training our own companion dogs.
Membership and training fees go towards maintaining our Clubroom, ensuring we have safe, up-to-date equipment, and providing continuing education to our trainers.
We are affiliated to DogsNZ (formally NZ Kennel Club), and run a number of their courses.
Our affiliation requires that we run an official competitive obedience and agility show annually.
These ‘shows’ bring in hundreds of dog handlers from all over New Zealand to compete. They require countless hours of organizing. Club members are encouraged, indeed expected, to help at these events. See our events section for dates to keep in your diary.
Meet the Committee

Jo Klein
PRESIDENT
Hi everyone, I am Jo Klein and I am president of RDTC for this year.
I have been a member of the club for about 20 years.
I joined initially as I wanted to develop a better relationship with my dogs.
I then discovered a wonderful place with very friendly and supportive trainers and club members. I tried out Obedience and to the relief of my Obedience instructor I then managed to get into Dog Agility training and I have never left.
I have been on committee for many years, including President for 4 terms.
I hope to be able to meet you all soon and I wish you all a happy year of wonderful dogs, great trainers and awesome friendships.

Judy Moody
SECRETARY
Hi, I’m Judy Moody, your Rotorua Dog Training Club Secretary for the year!
I first joined the club with my dog, Brew, looking for a polite household companion. That spark led us through CGC, Agility, Scent Work, and Rally-O. Eventually, I stepped into assisting with our domestic classes, and I absolutely love the joy of coaching great handlers and their dogs through pre-agility.
Outside of club duties, I live with my husband, Bruce, and our half-Schnauzer pup, Jed. Jed is a wonderful pet first, but we love trying out new training challenges together. He has big paws to fill after my first two dogs—Mutley, who introduced me to the joy of dog training, and Tess, a deeply loyal Labrador.
I aim to support the club this year and help our community thrive!

Diahanna O'Callahan
TREASURER
I joined the club in 2023 with Lily, my then six-month-old, highly reactive border collie. Since then, she has made great progress, moving from CG Basic to CGC Silver, and we are now waiting to complete the CGC Gold assessment. As a working breed, Lily thrives on activity, so we have explored a range of disciplines—alongside mountain biking—to find what suits us both. We are currently involved in Obedience, Flygility, and a little Rally-O and Hoopers.
The club has been a wonderful place to connect with other dog-minded people, and this year I decided to give back by taking on the role of treasurer.

Susan McLachlan
TRAINING COORDINATOR
Dogs have always been a part of my life, having grown up with our family pets. My involvement with RDTC began in 2022 when I enrolled in DD101 with our rehomed (mostly) Lab called Fred who had been a covid pup. Since completing DD101 and then DD102, I went on to join a Rally O class and then the obedience class. I also take part in scentwork and tracking with Fred. I now also have a springer spaniel/labrador cross 11-month-old delight (Betty) who I intend to train and compete in obedience, working trails, tracking trails and Rally O.
I took on the training coordinator role in 2024 and enjoy seeing new dogs and handlers coming into the club and then remaining to continue building bonds and have fun with their dogs in the variety of codes RDTC offer. I am now also a trainer for Rally O and Domestic Dog.

Julie Cowell
COMMITTEE MEMBER
I have been around dogs all my life and currently have two dogs, a Rottweiler called Amber (6 years old) and a Greyhound called George (9 years old).
I took my first dog for training at the dog club in the late 70’s, (a Cocker Spaniel) then in the late 80’s my first Rottweiler and then each Rottweiler after that plus an English Pointer and my first Greyhound.
I have “dabbled” in most dog sports with some of my dogs i.e. Competition Obedience, Rally-O, Agility and CGC (Canine Good Citizen).
I have served on the RDTC committee for a number of years was Secretary for a couple of years.
In 2010 I started as an Instructor for Domestic Dogs as well as Rally-O and CGC. I have been to numerous trainer training sessions through Dogs NZ with trainers from England, USA, Australia and NZ
I have put 4 of my dogs through the CGC assessment with my last Rotti (Penny) gaining CGC Gold. My Pointer got CGC Foundation at the ripe old age of 14 just a few months before she passed away.
I have been a Home Assessor for GAP (Greyhound as Pets) and am still an Assessor for dogs coming into the Canine Friends Pet Therapy program of which I am a life member. Both my current dogs are Canine Friends dogs who visit Fergusson Rest Home every fortnight.
I am passionate about dogs and enjoy helping Handlers to gain a dog that they can take anywhere.
I don’t believe there are any “bad dogs” just “uninformed owners”

Kim Poynter
COMMITTEE MEMBER
Having enjoyed being a dog owner most of my life, I joined the club 7 years ago with my White Shepherd, Ricco at my side.
He and I have tried some Scentwork, CGC, a term of Obedience but settled with Rally-O and he now has his Rally-O Excellence title.
Millie is 3 and loves to run and enjoys Flygility and manages to get around the Rally-O ring.
I have held the positions of; committee member for a year, President for 3 years, Domestic co-ordinator for 3 years and now back onto committee.
I enjoy witnessing the progression of handlers and their dogs while training Domestic Dog classes and Rally-O and feel that it is one way I can give back to the club.
It is a special privilege to have a connection with our dogs. I am proud of the achievements and positive influence that the club is able to provide in our Domestic Dog classes as more people join us every year.
Education of trainers and handlers is so important and we are fortunate to be part of a club that supports that.

Mia is my 3rd dog and is my adventure buddy, companion and much-loved pet. I got her from the Kawerau pound. I don't know what her breeding is, but there is some kind of working breed in there somewhere, so she needed a 'job'. So I joined the club, as wanted to do more with her than just bike rides and walks in the forest. So we have had a go at Agility, GCG, Rally-O and Obedience. We've also done a bit of scent work and Utility Dog training, and a fair chunk of wallaby chasing! I'm very grateful to all the volunteers at the club who have invested into our dog training journey. Just like raising children, it takes a village to train a dog...

Jesse Charters
DOMESTIC DOG COORDINATOR
My mother would tell you I was practically born In the whelping box along side her dogs and their pups. Dogs have been as much a part of my life as my very own DNA.
I’ve always been doing something be that sled racing huskies, racing greyhounds, running puppy classes, agility, rallyo, Cgc, scent work or something in between.
I’ve been part of the club since 2018, training classes since 2022 and a part of the committee since (?july?) 2025
