FAQs

  • Where do you hold classes?

Our Club Grounds and Club Rooms are at Karenga Park, 10 Bennetts Road, Koutu, Rotorua

  • Since July 2021 we also have an extra indoor venue at 403 Hamurana Rd, Hamurana, Rotorua. Please check with each course to clarify the location of training.

  • Can my puppy join?

For attendance we require dogs to be fully vaccinated prior to the start of term. In practice this means a minimum age of 14 weeks.

Dogs must be registered with the District Council.

(Kennel cough vaccine is not essential but recommended)

  • Are there puppy classes for puppies not fully vaccinated?

Central City Vets hold puppy classes for puppies who have had at least one round of vaccinations. Puppies must be between 8 - 16 weeks old. These are 4 week courses and start at the beginning of each month. Contact Natalie on 07 347 7448

  • What times and days of the week are training classes held?

Keep an eye on our class information page for training times. The days/times may vary each term due to availability of instructors who are all volunteers.

  • What should I bring to class?

You will need a flat collar and short lead, your dog Council registration tag to be on your dog, poo bags every week, and your dog’s vaccine record (for the first lesson).

Bring really tasty treats that your dog loves such as small pieces of Possyum, cheese or cooked chicken.

  • What if the classes are full.  What can I do?  Is there a waiting list?

The club does not hold a waiting list and we understand it can be hard to enrol in the classes  due to demand.  We recommend the clubs Facebook page where enrolments are advertised when open.  In the meantime, please refer to the Resources tab on this web site for some guidelines on what you can be doing with your dog while you are waiting to attend.

  • Can I enrol in a class in advance?

Enrolments for each term open a few weeks before the class begins. You cannot enrol earlier as the dates/times/available instructors are not finalised until then. Keep checking our Facebook page or Homepage on this website for notification of enrolment opening.

  • My dog already knows basic commands.  Do I have to do the basic course or can I start at the next level?

Although your dog may complete all the basic instructions at home, they need to learn how to do that with other distractions around, such as new environments, unknown people and dogs.  Therefore we recommend that you and your dog complete the Canine Good Basic course first.

  • I have been to a basic class before, but now I have a new dog.  Should I attend again?

You may be feeling confident that you have enough knowledge that you don’t need to  attend a basic class however your new dog has practice being in close proximity to other dogs, people and other distractions which is an important part of the training.  We recommend attending.

  •  Is it OK to do the basic course twice?

Yes, you are welcome to repeat classes until you and the dog feel comfortable.  Ask your instructor if they think it would be appropriate as they will have a good understanding of where you and your dog are at.

  • What does my dog have to know to be able to do join in - Agility, Noseworx, and Rally-O or  competition obedience?

You and your dog will need to have completed the Canine Good Basic (beginners) class to commence further training types.  Refer to the Class  Descriptions  section for further details.

  • My dog has passed the Canine Good Basics test at another club - do I need to repeat it?

No, you do not need to repeat the class

Trainers and helpers

We urgently require helpers to assist our Instructors

each term. No special experience is required just a

motivation to help handlers train their dogs. You

would be training alongside an experienced instructor

and supporting them. This is a very rewarding role

especially at the end of the 8 week course seeing all the

dogs graduating into well behaved dogs.
